Crisis in Syria – Assessment of refugee camps in Northern Greece
Period: 06/2016
Employer: CARE Germany - Luxemburg
Description: Since March 2011 there are protests against the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Violence and beastliness in Syria increased. For this reason, more than 4.8 million Syrian refugees were registered at UNHCR in June 2016 and fled mainly to the neighbouring countries Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. During 2015 an increasing number of migrants and refugees have been entering Greece, mainly from Turkey, to continue their way via the Western Balkans countries (Macedonia, Serbia) towards the EU. At the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016 more and more border restrictions and closures have led to a tailback of refugees on the mainland of Greece, which led eventually to the setup of official and unofficial camps. Additionally, refugees are living more and more in urban surroundings (mainly Athens and Thessaloniki) without any permanent accommodation. CARE deployed a first fact-finding mission in March 2016 and has come to the conclusion that there are serious humanitarian needs and gaps and thus became active on the Greek mainland. CARE has developed a strategic approach focusing on interventions in three key sectors: 1. Food security and non-food items (NFI) support through cash programming; 2. Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) through the provision of safe water, adequate sanitation and community mobilisation for hygiene awareness and 3. Protection, with a focus on basic legal support, psychosocial support and CGBV referral. Key aspect of this assessment was the sector WASH in official and unofficial camps
