Crisis in Syria – Design and implementation of water supply and sanitation facilities in refugee camps
Period: 08/2013 – 09/2013
Employer: Technisches Hilfswerk (THW, German Federal Agency for Technical Relief) on behalf of UNICEF and UNHCR
Description: Since March 2011 there are protests against the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Violence and beastliness in Syria increased. For this reason more than 1.7 million Syrian refugees were registered at UNHCR in August 2013 and fled mainly to the neighbouring countries Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. More than 500,000 Syrians were recorded in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. To support the Jordanian Government UNHCR and the local NGO Hashemite Charity Organisation opened a first refugee camp (Za’atari) in July 2012 in Mafraq Governorate, 12 km away from the border, with a capacity of approximately 140,000. Due to the continuing high influx of Syrians it was decided in March 2013 to construct another UNHCR refugee camp in Zarqa Governorate: Azraq Camp with a design capacity of 130,000 refugees (first phase 54,000). First plans assumed that Azraq Camp supposed to be opened on 01st September 2013, however the opening date was postponed due to unexpected free capacities in Za’atari Camp.
In both camps THW supported UNICEF and UNHCR in the field of WASH: establishment and operation of water supply and sanitation facilities.
Services provided: - Design of water supply and sanitation facilities at Azraq Camp

sewage at Azraq Camp
- Commissioning of water supply systems at Azraq Camp
